Between 2015 and 2018, a communication campaign was carried out to involve the urban population of Bolivia with the scientific expedition Identidad Madidi, through the dissemination of information about the field work and the results of the studies.

Interviews, press releases and reports on the expedition were promoted in the national and international media, as well as publications on the results of the expedition.

A total of 320 news and reports on the Identidad Madidi scientific expedition were published in the written and digital press, web pages, digital magazines and blogs, and on radio and television. Sixty percent of the news items were disseminated internationally, while 40% were disseminated through the Bolivian media.

The publication of 18 reports by The National Geographic and Mongabay was significant, helping to position Bolivia as a country with great biological wealth, and Madidi as important to conserve, potentially as a world heritage site.

The Identidad Madidi Facebook page was created in 2015. It proved to be an effective tool to achieve significant followers and capture their interest in the knowledge of nature and its value for human life. Currently, it has 90,000 followers (93% from Bolivia), with a reach of 29,311,736 people. From 2015 to date, 583 publications (texts, photographs and short videos) have been disseminated and users have made more than 1.3 million interactions.

Expedition finds butterfly bonanza in Bolivian national park (PHOTOS)

Scientists on a multi-year expedition in Bolivia’s Madidi National Park have recorded nearly a thousand species of butterflies – with many more expected to come.

Madidi National Park sits along Bolivia’s northern border with Peru. Referred to as potentially the most biodiverse protected area in the world, Madidi spans a gamut of different landscapes – from lowland Amazon rainforest to the snowy peaks of the Andes and everything in between.

BUTTERFLIES OF MADIDI

Bolivia’s Madidi National Park is rich with wildlife—birds of many stripes, mammals large and small, reptiles, fish, and a stunning array of butterflies.

Thanks to the Identidad Madidi expedition, a multi-institutional effort to describe still unknown species in the park and to showcase its wonders, we now know of a staggering 1,080 varieties of butterfly living in Madidi (950 species and an additional 130 subspecies). By comparison, there are approximately 725 in the U.S. and Canada.

Identidad Madidi

Monitoring Jaguars and Other Charismatic Species in Bolivia’s Alto Madidi

Alto Madidi, on the upper Madidi River where the Andean foothills flatten out onto to the Amazonian floodplain, is a magical place and the sixth site on our two-year altitudinal transect in Madidi National Park. Extraordinary biological diversity, remote wilderness, and abundant wildlife – much of which seems almost naïve to the presence of people – are an intoxicating combination for the team Identidad Madidi.

Monitoring Jaguars and Other Charismatic Species in Bolivia’s Alto Madidi

The Madidi protected area takes its name from this river, though the river itself is named after the Tacana indigenous word for an ant species found on its sandy beaches.

For most of the team our visit to Alto Madidi is a first. Not so for Bolivian wildlife biologists Guido Ayala and Maria Viscarra, two of my colleagues from WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society). Guido and Maria have spent the last 15 years generating knowledge about, and then monitoring populations of, charismatic wildlife species in the jungles of Madidi and beyond.

Identidad Madidi Explores the Breathtaking Mountains of Bolivia’s Apolobamba Range

Three in One! The dramatic and breathtaking mountains of the Apolobamba range provided the backdrop for our third, fourth, and fifth Identidad Madidi expedition study sites.

Expected to take two years to complete, Identidad Madidi is a scientific expedition intended to draw attention to the wonders of Bolivia’s Madidi National Park. Our team of conservationists is investigating fourteen different habitats spanning 6,000 meters – from the Andes down to the Amazon – in what is the most biodiverse protected area on the planet.
